Love Without Leverage
How Gratitude Loosens the Fearful Hand
Free to read

-----/////-----
Love without leverage gives permission to change.
It can want alignment without trying to manufacture obedience. It can tell the truth without turning truth into a weapon. It can feel fear without making another person pay for it.
I think a lot of people call it love when what they really mean is favorable terms. Stay close. Stay legible. Stay useful. Stay the version of yourself that keeps me comfortable, and I will keep calling this care. But that is not love cleaned of fear. That is control with better branding.
Maybe that is why suffering matters so much. Not because pain makes people wise. It often does not. Sometimes it just makes them sharper in the wrong ways. More defensive. More transactional. More possessive. But when suffering is carried cleanly, it lends perspective. Perspective teaches gratitude. Gratitude lowers the hand. And a lowered hand has less need to grip love by the throat.
Love without leverage may be one of the most abundant things human beings are capable of offering one another. It does not require wealth, perfect timing, or ideal conditions. And yet, at a moment when the world seems starved for exactly this kind of love, it feels unbearably far away.
Maybe that is the work. To stop calling control devotion. To stop confusing possession with safety. To learn how to love in a way that does not demand stillness from what is alive.
